When walking the streets of Silver Lake you can feel the distinct creativity in the air. Renting an apartment in Silver Lake means you are joining a community. There’s more to your apartment than the four walls surrounding you.

Silver Lake offers tons of outdoor festivals, and bars that will keep you busy all week long.

Here’s a little guide to some of our favorite eateries, bars, businesses, and attractions local to Silver Lake. We know you’ll be a regular in no time.

The Kitchen

Location: 4348 Fountain Ave

The Kitchen opened its doors in 2000. It is owned and operated by Silver Lake residents to reflect the diversity, color, and vibrancy of the neighborhood and to create a space where everyone will feel right at home.

Everything is made from scratch. They make their own stocks, dressings, and sauces, working hard to stay consistent in their preparations.

Their goal is to create fresh comfort food. While they do maintain a stable core menu, they like experimenting with new trends and exploring which ones work and which don’t.

Most of the staff have been working at The Kitchen for more than 10 years because they are an essential part of the operation and they know it.

Manilla Sunset

Location: 1016 N. Vermont Ave.

Manila Sunset at Manila Bay evokes in the hearts of Filipinos in America, remembrances of home and the natural charms of the Philippine islands. Manila Sunset derived its name from this beautiful Philippine scenery – for in many ways, the food of Manila Sunset evokes the same nostalgic feeling.

They bring back the memories of old-fashioned home cooking and traditional celebrations: Pasko, Simbang Gabi, Flores de Mayo, weddings, homecomings, and other joyous occasions.

Manila Sunset specializes in a few unique and hard-to-find Filipino foods such as Bibingkang Galapong and Puto Bumbong which are traditionally found in church plazas and roadside stalls only during the Christmas Season.

Their best seller, Pancit Malabon is prepared from an original well-guarded recipe from the fishing village of Malabon from which the name of the delicacy came from.

India’s Restaurant

Location: 4366 Fountain Ave. 2,

Our restaurant is the best restaurant in the city. They serve with great concern about their customer’s satisfaction and their health. They are and will always be providing good and fresh foods which are rich in required nutrients.

They serve up all of your favorite curries and Indian dishes. It’s a great spot for dine-in or for take-out!

The Black Cat

Location:  3909 West Sunset Blvd

The Black Cat Tavern opened in October 1966. It was one of several gay bars that operated at that time along a one-mile stretch of Sunset Boulevard in Silver Lake. On New Year’s Eve 1967, The Black Cat was targeted in an undercover police sting.

As a trio named the Rhythm Queens played in the new year and balloons dropped, the patrons and bartenders celebrated. Unbeknownst to the crowd, a dozen plainclothes police officers were positioned throughout the room in anticipation of any “lewd conduct.” A few seconds after midnight the police witnessed several men hugging and kissing and their raid began.

Soon after The Black Cat demonstration, Charles Talley and Benny Baker (two of the six men convicted) filed an appeal with the California Court of Appeals, the California Supreme Court, and the Supreme Court of the United States. Their appeal was unsuccessful in California and their convictions were upheld. The U.S Supreme Court declined to hear the case.

However, their attorney mounted a legal defense that would fundamentally alter the social, cultural, and political tenor of the LGBTQ rights movement in America. The defense argued that his clients were entitled to the same legal rights and equal protection that are guaranteed to all Americans by the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

The Black Cat is recognized by the Cultural Heritage Commission of the City of Los Angeles as Historic-Cultural Monument Number 939. A commemorative plaque on the façade of the building honors The Black Cat as the site of the first documented LGBT civil rights demonstration in the nation.

Dinosaur Coffee

Location: 4344 W Sunset Blvd.

Dinosaur Coffee was founded in 2014 by Michelle & Ben Hantoot. After 6 years of incredibly hard work, 2 sweet daughters, a move to the suburbs, and a sprinkle of a pandemic, they decided it was time to sell their coffee shop to their good friends, Saadat & Janine Awan, owners of Woodcat Coffee in Echo Park.

Community is at the heart of what they do. The café brings people together through a love of good coffee and gives people a space for quality time with themselves or with family and friends.

Their dedicated, friendly team of baristas would love to serve you some yummy drinks and pastries at both of our locations.

The Los Angeles Museum of Love

Location: 4320 Melrose Ave.

The Los Angeles Museum of Love was conceived and developed by Amy Sweetman, a Professor of Psychology who has spent over 25 years teaching Psychology, Neuroscience, and the Psychology of Sexuality.

There are no outside funding or grant sources.   It is simply a fun, personal bucket list project that has been developed for the Los Angeles area.  The cost of the museum has been devised to cover the cost of running it. It is low-tech and quirky- but a fresh change of pace!

Skylight Books

Location: 1555 Vine St #527s

Skylight Books is a general bookstore serving the historic Los Angeles neighborhoods of Hollywood, Los Feliz, Silver Lake, Echo Park, and Downtown. Located in the shadow of Griffith Park and its iconic Observatory, our Los Feliz neighborhood is host to many independently owned shops, restaurants, and movie theaters.
